Digital Picture Frames

I just met with the guys from i-mate who came in to demonstrate their Momento digital photo frame, and I was impressed. In fact it’s one of the best I have seen.

You can use USB or memory cards, but it's best using wireless. With Momento, you can manage all your pictures on your computer running Windows Vista™ using Windows Media Player 11. Then you can simply stream your pictures direct to your Momento

Using the picture frames remote control you can sort, browse and display pictures any way you like, Use Tags, Folders, Ratings, Date Taken and Playlists. Additionally there is on online service so you send pictures via MMS or access from your online services that you have access to.

The picture frame is avialble in 7" & 10" (Go for the 10") and can be purchased exclusively @ PC World, Dixons & Currys

So first experience with the HP Printer

So this weekend I got round to using my new HP printer, and I must say it’s awesome! I decided to take the bull by the horns and my first print was a borderless A3. I opened up the my NEF file in Adobe Photoshop, made some minor adjustments to levels, cropped the picture and finally used interpolation to increase the size of picture in stages of 110%. To print the picture I used the HP Adobe Photoshop print plugin, which is very easy to use printing menu. The final print on HP Photo gloss paper has great colour reproduction, which is a result of the hardware technology and the investment in the producing Vivera Pigment ink that I am going to frame the picture for my study. Not bad for the first print.

For you interest, I was using....

HP 9180 printer - Networked

5 year old Pentium 4 PC, ( Yes I know I need to upgrade this, but it works)

Windows Vista Ultimate (with Aero)

256mb nVidia  graphics card

1gb Ram

Colour calibration using Huey form Pantone

Photoshop CS2

Wacom Tablet

DAM...

iView was acquired by Microsoft last year and I for one was not that familiar with the product, so while at Focus I managed to catch up with the team,  and learnt about this advanced Digital Asset Management tool (DAM). While Windows Vista is great at giving you the basics, if you really serious about workflow, then I encourage you to take a look at this product. I have just started using it and I can see it becoming my preferred tool.  See below to see what this tool can do for you and why not check out how National Geographic utilised this product on the National Geographic Africa Aerial Survey project.

I new it would be dangerous……

I new it would be dangerous being at the Focus show for 4 days and it was! My credit card took a pounding. Day one a new back pack, after checking out all the bags stands Lowepro, Billingham etc. I bought the Kata 103 back pack, a great design taking 4 – 5 lenses, a tripod fixing, laptop compartment while still being extremely compact and best of all it’s very comfortable. It ticked all the boxes for me. Second purchase was a new tripod, I have been considering a carbon fibre model for a while, eventually looking at all the models available at the show and talking to a lot of people, I decided on the Manfrotto 055MF3 Magfibre Pro Tripod  so out with the old metal back braking unit. Next I wanted to investigate the black art of monitor colour calibration, which I have always struggled with. I looked at several options and several presentations which all looked very convincing, but I finally visited the Pantone stand and purchased their Huey device. This is very easy to use with no complicated icc profiles to load after the calibration, its all done automatically for you, definitely my best buy at the show and its Windows Vista compatible, you just need to download the driver. Now I can see the correct colours my biggest investment was to be a new printer. I had been to several review sites prior to Focus so it was an easier decision but I did visit the printer manufactures for a final check. I ended up with the HP Photosmart Pro B9180.
